King Raul Castillo and Queen Lucia Flores are minor characters from the Disney animated series, Elena of Avalor. They are the parents of princesses Elena and Isabel and the former rulers of Avalor. Queen Lucia was the bearer of the Amulet of Avalor before Elena, while King Raul was the bearer of the Scepter of Light.

History

Raul was from Nueva Vista. At some point, he married Lucia and moved to Avalor. They became the King and Queen of Avalor for many years, and Lucia at some point gave birth to Elena, and some time later, Isabel. By Elena's fifteenth birthday, her mother gave her the Amulet of Avalor saying that it would always protect her from danger.

A year later, Queen Lucia and King Raul were on their way home to the palace while being chased by the evil, power-hungry sorceress Shuriki from the Northern Isles in the process, looking to take over Avalor from them by any means necessary, even if it meant taking their very lives at the worst to usurp the throne from them. Lucia and Raul were murdered by Shuriki when they returned to the palace, with Elena witnessing their murder firsthand as she had just come out to welcome her parents home when she saw Shuriki strike the moment the royal couple let their guard down, before Shuriki went after her to remove the only witness to her usurping the throne so her claim would be undisputed, while Alacazar took care of protecting Francisco, Luisa, and Princess Isabel. Elena avenges her parents' murder when she destroys Shuriki's wand and frees Avalor from her tyranny with the support of her remaining family, the Royal Family of Enchancia, and the citizens of Avalor City. Though Shuriki escapes for the time being, her threat over Avalor was gone, and Elena's parents would know peace in the afterlife, at least for now.

In the episode "A Day to Remember", Elena and Isabel remembered the good times they had with their parents before they died. Isabel missed them so much that she didn't want to go to the Día de los Muertos festivities and pay her respects to her parents' memorial until Elena told her the reason she herself enjoyed this day. This convinced Isabel to suit up in her Día de los Muertos costume and join Elena and their grandparents at the memorial for the King and Queen, with Isabel leaving a drawing of her parents and the ceremonial Pan Dulce bread on the memorial, which brought her grandparents to happy tears at her contribution to her late parents' memorial. At the end of the episode, thanks to Elena's ability to see ghosts alongside animal spirits, she was able to see Raul and Lucia's ghosts, smiling proudly at their daughters from the afterlife, shortly after Isabel mentioned that she felt that their parents were still with them somehow.

In "The Princess Knight", it is revealed that Queen Lucia was the best fencer in all of Avalor and almost won the Swordsman Tournament Cup, only to have her opponent, Lord Elrod, cheat by breaking her wrist, and as a result of that injury, she forfeited, unable to compete further, allowing Lord Elrod to win by default. Several years later, after learning the truth, Elena righted that wrong when she defeated Elrod's son to reclaim the title and dedicated the win in her mother's honor.

However, as of the events of "Realm of the Jaquins", Elena had not fully avenged the death of her parents as, while she destroyed Shuriki's wand, the tool responsible for murdering them, Shuriki, as the guilty party responsible for the crime, escaped, and was now planning revenge with the support of the Delgado Family. Elena had to deal with her once and for all to ensure her parents' murder had been avenged for good.

Season Two

In the Season 2 pilot, "The Jewel Of Maru", King Raul and Queen Lucia appear before their eldest daughter due to it being the Day of the Dead again, noticing her in a state of despair, concerning them. After Elena explains her situation regarding the test foreshadowed by Quita Moz and her fear of failing it, never being crowned Queen, and succeeding them as Avalor's sovereign, along with the situation with the Delgados, her parents offer her valuable advice about how this isn't the test she was worried about, and she must do what she thinks is best for Avalor as she never gave up, even when she was imprisoned in the Amulet of Avalor. Their advice allows Elena to retrieve the Jewel of Maru from the Delgados and seal it away for good so it won't be used for evil. Though she arrives late back at her parents' memorial with the Día de los Muertos festivities over, she is grateful for the advice they gave her and tells them she'll see them again at next year's Day of the Dead.

However, later on, Shuriki plans on getting hold of Queen Lucia's Carnival Tiara that Victor and Carla failed to steal previously, intending to use the jewel in it to craft a new wand for herself. Though Carla nearly succeeds at getting it in her first attempt at getting into the Royal Treasury, she's stopped by a repentant Naomi, but due to being so close to Princess Elena and Naomi now, Carla would be able to steal the tiara when the time is right, but only if she can do so before the Shape-shifting Potion Shuriki had her drink wears off and exposes her.

In "Rise of the Sorceress", as the Shape-shifting Potion begins to wear off, Carla manages to acquire the Reversal Potion that Mateo planned to use to restore Fiero to flesh and blood, allowing Shuriki to revive him and convince him to ally with her again, despite his hesitation due to her past actions against him. They break into the Royal Treasury, and Shuriki manages to attain the gem from Lucia's tiara to craft a new wand from while breaking the rest of the tiara in half under her foot to add further insult to Lucia's memory after murdering her and Raul. However, as they take their leave, they are spotted by Elena, who is horrified to see Shuriki again, flashing back to the fateful day when she saw Shuriki cut down Raul and Lucia before her very eyes during her original takeover of the kingdom.

In the following episode, "Shapeshifters", Elena vows to take down Shuriki personally to attain revenge on her for Raul and Lucia's murders, wanting to make sure her parents can rest easy in the afterlife of the Spirit World once she makes sure Shuriki pays for her crimes, once and for all.

Raul and Lucia appear in flashbacks of their murder in the episode "The Race for the Realm", as their deaths continue to haunt Elena, possibly as a case of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), right up to the point where her lust for revenge for their murder causes her to go after Shuriki and exhaust herself in the process, allowing Shuriki to acquire all three parts of the Scepter of Night, leaving Elena guilt-ridden and ashamed that she let her vengeance to avenge Raul and Lucia allow Shuriki to attain what she had been searching for.

Raul and Lucia's deaths are avenged once and for all in "Song of the Sirenas" when Elena finally slays Shuriki with the Scepter of Light in Nueva Vista, attaining her vengeance at long last so her parents could finally rest in peace with their murderer now confined to the dark side of the Spirit World for eternity so she would never threaten anyone in Avalor or the Ever Realm ever again.

Season Three

Their spirits are seen in "Flower of Light" when their eldest daughter and her childhood friend Felecia go to the spirit world to rekindle the mystical Flower of Light. Months later, a portrait of them is seen when Princess Elena expresses her joy at seeing Naomi again.

Their spirits reappear in the series finale, "Coronation Day", when Elena is trapped in the Spirit World with Ash Delgado after choosing to go after Esteban instead of Ash because of personal revenge as they tried to free the Four Shades of Awesome to attack Avalor with. Per the rules laid by the Grand Macaw, Elena and Ash would face each other in an olaball match, and the "winner" would be returned to Avalor. Raul and Lucia joined Elena's team with Zuzo, but during the match, when Elena began to grow angry and frustrated, allowing Ash to take a lead on her, they call a timeout to talk to her about her behavior. When Elena explains how she's angry with Esteban for his part in Shuriki's original takeover that led to their deaths, Raul and Lucia tell her that being angry with him will not bring them back from the dead, and she must not let her anger cloud her judgement, or seek revenge believing it will solve everything.

King Raul explains that he had prevented Shuriki from attacking Avalor's allies when he was still alive and in power as Avalor's sovereign, but angered by his interference with her plans, Shuriki turned her attention to Avalor in retaliation, figuring with King Raul and Queen Lucia out of the way and Avalor under her iron fist, their allies would be vulnerable to a second attempt by her to conquer them so she would rule over all in the Ever Realm and no one could, or would be able to, stop her at that point. Esteban had tried to warn Raul about Shuriki seeking revenge, but he ignored him, thus leading to Esteban allying with Shuriki under the agreement that his family would be spared her wrath, but Shuriki still killed Raul and Lucia as she originally intended to do for stopping her when she attacked their allies and went back on her word with Esteban. Hearing that, Elena calms down and apologizes for her behavior, now understanding that revenge is never the answer, and this allows her to figure out the meaning behind the Grand Macaw's words regarding what would happen to the winner and loser of the olaball match. Thus, Elena loses the olaball match to Ash on purpose, resulting in Ash being condemned to staying in the Spirit World for eternity while Elena is allowed to return to Avalor, spending one last goodbye with her parents before returning home, knowing they will always be watching over her from the Spirit World from this point on. After stopping the Four Shades of Awesome and forgiving Esteban, Elena officially succeeds Raul and Lucia as sovereign of Avalor as she is crowned Queen by Francisco.
